WHO WE ARE
The Legion of Mary is the largest apostolic organization of lay people in the Catholic Church, with well over 3 million active members in almost every country of the world. It has been active in the United States since 1931, has been approved by the last eight Popes, and was endorsed by the Second Vatican Council. The main purpose of the Legion of Mary is to give glory to God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active cooperation in Mary's and the Church's work of Evangelization.
OBJECTIVES
The Blessed Virgin Mary calls each and every one of us, " Do as He commands you." The Legion sees as its priority the spiritual welfare of each individual. Personal sanctification is sought by attempting to imitate Mary in her virtues of Faith, Charity, Love and Humility. The Legion spreads devotion to Mary, primarily by encouraging the recitation of the Rosary. (
Mary's request at Fatima). The Faith and the gifts of grace received at Baptism and Confirmation are further developed as the legionnaire dedicated to Mary and her son, Jesus, perform weekly apostolic work. Evangelization and the New Commandment of God come alive through the prayers and works of the Legion.
WORKS OF THE LEGION
Members become instruments of the Holy Spirit through a balanced program of prayer and service. They participate in the life of the parish through collaboration in every apostolic and missionary undertaking sponsored by the parish. Other examples of the work of the Legion of Mary include: prison ministry, taking Holy Eucharist to the homebound, religious education, Methodist Hospital ministry, Pilgrim Statue-Our Lady of Fatima visitations, praying the rosary and leading Communion services at nursing homes, independent and assisted living centers, home enthronment of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary, Saturday devotion of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Pregnancy Resource Center, organizing Fatima Procession in October and Holy Hour of Reparation on every 4th Thursday of the month in the Divine Mercy Chapel from 7pm to 8pm. Legionaires are under the guidance of spiritual directors, Father Jaison and Deacon Charles Plant, named by the pastor. The Legion is, in essence an extension of the heart and hands of the pastor.
MEMBERSHIP
There are active members and
auxiliary (praying) members. To become an active member one should be a practicing Catholic over the age of eighteen. For younger persons, a junior membership is available.
Active members have an obligatory requirement to attend a weekly meeting, which lasts from an hour to an hour and a half, and to perform weekly 2 hours of active Legionary work usually done with other members. The daily recitation of the Catena, a prayer which consists mainly of the Magnificat, Mary's own prayer is also required.
Auxiliary members do not attend the weekly Legion meeting and are not obliged to perform 2 hours of Legion apostolic work. They are only asked to pray the Tessera each day for the success of all Legionaires work throughout the world.
Is the Holy Spirit and Mary calling you? Come and see as there is a three month easing in period to see how work and family obligations blend with the tried and proven system of the Legion of Mary. Any Catholic, young, not so young, single, married, or retired who would like to draw closer to Jesus and His Mother Mary is welcome to give it a try.
Holy Hour of Reparation:
The Legion of Mary invites all parishioners to the "Holy Hour of Reparation" to pray for Priests, Seminarians and Religious vocations at the Divine Mercy Chapel. The Hour of Reparation is celebrated from 7pm-8pm on the fourth Thursday of each month excluding November and December.
